The leather aviator jacket has a long history in the world of flying. Pilots were subjected to the challenging conditions of flying at great heights during World War I. They required a sturdy, useful garment that could resist the weather in order to stay warm. The first leather aviator jackets were produced as a result, and they were fashioned from premium leather and featured a close fit to maximize warmth and protection.

The demand for leather aviator coats increased after the war. The A-2 Flight Jacket which was first presented by the US Army Air Corps in the 1930s and then made into the official jacket for pilots. The A-2 jacket had a more streamlined shape than the A-1 and was constructed of horsehide leather.

Leather aviator jackets rose to prominence as a symbol of counterculture and revolt in the 1950s and 1960s. They were popularized by celebrities who wore them, including Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley.
